Born Prince Rogers Nelson (1958 to 2016), he is most famously known for his extravagant stage presence, make up use, and musical talents such as his vast vocal range and capability of playing a variety of musical instruments. While also having a highly successful solo singing career, Prince was involved in movies, song writing, and music production. Born Deborah Christine Garrett on June 24, 1960, she began her career as a background singer, but slowly evolved into a songwriter. “Sid” as Quincy Jones called her worked very closely with Jennifer Hudson on the movie, Dreamgirls. In addition she contributed to the album of artists such as Michael Jackson. Throughout her career as a songwriter, she has been given the opportunity to be on the soundtrack of movies such as Rio and was a guest on the television show, American Idol. Garrett has also been awarded the honor of a Grammy.
Paul Laurence
Laurence began his career as a keyboardist in a Baptist church as a child. He attempted his own solo career, but was not successful until he became a popular songwriter for a variety of lyricists. After working with artists such as Stephanie Mills and Freddie Jackson, he became a sought after songwriter than many recording companies were interested in utilizing. With this increase in popularity, Laurence was given the opportunity to strive towards a more successful solo singing career. Based on his career, he was successful as not only a songwriter, but as a singer as well.
Rod Temperton
British songwriter, Rod Temperton was born October 9, 1949. His musical background began with his part as a keyboardist in the band, Heatwave. As he continued with his career, he was made a part of Quincy Jones’ music production team. This opportunity allowed him to develop his songwriting career further. His work included writing songs for artists such as Michael Jackson and George Benson. He also received a Grammy for his work on Quincy Jones’ album, Back on the Block.
