Ghostwriting Today
The recent alleged use of a ghostwriter by Drake has brought the topic back into the forefront of Hip-Hop music. Drake was accused of using a ghostwriter during most of his successful music career. Other present day artists accused of using ghostwriters are: Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Lil’ Kim, P. Diddy, Lil Wayne, Nas, and others. This is a major deal in the world of streaming services because crediting can be very lax for these artists.
“Credibility is key in hip-hop,” said 1Xtra’s Music Manager, Austin Daboh. “In R&B, for instance, the majority of the stories are about love and sex, they can relate to anyone. But 50 Cent rapping about being shot nine times: that’s personal. Rap lyrics should be hyper-personal and hyper-localised. So I can see why ghostwriting would be a problem for some people.”
